Ce sont les pilotes Ferrari qui ont dominé cette première séance. Seulement 50 millièmes séparent les deux pilotes de la Scuderia. Lewis Hamilton signe le troisième temps au volant de sa McLaren, devançant Robert Kubica.
Heikki Kovalainen qui prend la cinquième place se retrouve avec une seconde de retard sur Kimi Räikkönen. Le français Sébastien Bourdais se place en bas de la fiche des chronos en signant le dix-huitième temps.
