EL - Giovinazzi devance Gasly, Binder fait son retour
Vainqueur des deux courses du meeting de Bakou, Antonio Giovinazzi a signé le meilleur temps des essais libres GP2 au Red Bull Ring devant son coéquipier Pierre Gasly.

Giovinazzi a dominé ses rivaux de près de trois dixièmes, Gasly et King étant les seuls pilotes à s'être approchés à moins d'une demi-seconde de l'Italien. Les chronos étaient pourtant serrés au bout de 20 minutes d'essais : Pierre Gasly, Artem Markelov et Sergey Sirotkin se tenaient alors en 0"019 en tête du classement.
La séance a été marquée par plusieurs incidents. Tout d'abord, Gustav Malja a immobilisé sa Rapax en piste, manifestement en proie à un problème technique puisque de la fumée s'en échappait. Le drapeau rouge a été agité. Ensuite, Nabil Jeffri et Mitch Evans sont tous deux sortis de piste au premier virage, provoquant l'intervention de la voiture de sécurité virtuelle.
Binder remplace Matsushita, exclu
Exclu suite à son pilotage dangereux à Bakou, Nobuharu Matsushita a cédé le volant de son ART à René Binder pour le meeting du Red Bull Ring. Vétéran du GP2 avec 68 courses (pour 16 points seulement), Binder est plus performant cette saison en Formule V8 3.5 avec déjà deux podiums en 2016. L'Autrichien court donc à domicile pour son retour en GP2 et s'est classé 11e des essais libres.
