Le leader du championnat Alex Lynn a accompli son devoir au Red Bull Ring. Intouchable tout au long du week-end, le pilote Carlin s'est imposé devant son coéquipier Emil Bernstorff et le Suédois Jimmy Eriksson.
Le départ, très agité, a provoqué la sortie de la voiture de sécurité. Trois monoplaces se sont retrouvées au tapis après un accrochage entre elles : cela concernait Alex Fontana, Dean Stoneman et Robert Visoiu. A ce stade, Alex Lynn conservait la tête devant son coéquipier Emil Bernstorff. Richie Stanaway montait au troisième rang devant Jmmy Eriksson, Marvin Kirchhöfer, Nick Yelloly, Luis Sa Silva et Mathéo Tuscher.
A la reprise, Richie Stanaway est sorti large et s'est retrouvé en difficulté. Jimmy Eriksson l'a dépassé après une poignée de virages. Marvin Kirchhöfer est resté à sa place tandis que Mathéo Tuscher s'est débarrassé de Nick Yelloly et Luis Sa Silva. Au sixième tour, Alfonso Celis et Adderly Fong se sont accrochés et ont abandonné dans la foulée. L'aileron arrière de la Jenzer s'est retrouvé passablement endommagé.
A l'arrivée, Alex Lynn s'est imposé devant Emil Bernstorff et Jimmy Eirksson. Richie Stanaway a rallié l'arrivée au quatrième rang devant Marvin Kirchhöfer, Mathéo Tuscher et Nick Yelloly. Huitième, Luis Sa Silva se retrouve en pole position de la deuxième course du week-end, qui débutera dimanche matin dès 9h25.
