Davide Valsecchi a réalisé la première pole position de l’année sur le circuit de Sepang en Malaisie. Le pilote italien a réalisé son meilleur tour en 1:45.494 pour devancer Luiz Razia et Max Chilton.
Les écarts en tête de cette séance furent très serrés puisque quatre pilotes se tiennent en moins d’un dixième. Stefano Coletti complètent le quatuor de tête devant Fabio Leimer et James Calado.
Meilleur temps des essais libres, Jolyon Palmer termine la séance en septième position devant Giedo van der Garde et Felipe Nasr. Après avoir connu des essais libres difficiles où il avait été sorti de la piste par Johnny Ceccoto Jr, Esteban Gutierrez s’est emparé de la 15ème place de la séance, juste devant Tom Dillmann.
